Tradition and technology have had a long and comfortable marriage at Old Town. In 1898 we built our first wood-and-canvas canoe, a more durable, lower maintenance improvement on the Native American birch bark canoe that was its inspiration. We did the same thing with the kayak in 1940, rendering the traditional seal-skin design in more durable wood-and-canvas.

The same spirit of innovation led us to introduce lightweight fiberglass versions of our kayaks and canoes in the 1950s and '60s. And it has continued into the 21st century, as we continually strive to advance the art of paddling through better designs and lighter, more durable materials, like today's PolyLink3 ™ , SuperLink3 ™ and Hydrolite.

Three-layer linear polyethylene technology that provides exceptional stiffness, low weight and built-in flotation at an affordable price.

Royalex ®
Our exclusive version of Uniroyal's Royalex ® , a multi-laminate composed of ABS, ABS foam and crosslinked vinyl that provides ultra light weight, excellent strength and resiliency.

Fiberglass
Extremely lightweight with a high strength-to-weight ratio, fiberglass can be formed to very fine design lines when critical performance is paramount.

Single Layer Linear Polyethylene
Excellent durability at an affordable price, ideal for smaller kayaks like the Otter.

NEW! Variable Layer Polyethylene
Next-generation material based on our time tested 3 layer process, our R&D team has designed a process that provides each area of a boat exactly what it needs, for increased durability where necessary and lower weight in areas not needing reinforcement. This advancement gives us a10% weight savings over single-layer polyethylene of the same stiffness.
